You may know that REALTORS have a great deal of influence with legislators and the community. I thought you might be interested to learn a little about the process of how we influence issues at the State Capital. First of all, the Colorado Association of REALTORS (CAR) has a Government Affairs Division whose purpose is to monitor and influence issues that ensure economic vitality; protect private property owners' rights and preserve our environment. They work closely with our lobbyist organization to collectively uncover subtleties on issues of importance; help shape legislation, and educate legislators about key aspects of the REALTOR point of view. When important issues are being considered and the opposition is overwhelming, you may see an electronic "Call to Action" from CAR. These email messages are critical; timely and could mean the difference between victory and defeat - so don't delete them your best interest and your clients best interest are at stake. A minute of your time can have a great impact, I promise you!
Another key element of this process is the involvement of REALTOR volunteers. During the legislative session, CAR brings together approximately 45 REALTORS from across the State to evaluate issues relating to Water; Business, Taxation, and Housing; Land Use; and Regulatory Issues. Last year, we reviewed 15 Water bills, 21 Business, Taxation, and Housing bills; 23 Land Use bills; and 20 Regulatory bills. For a vast majority of bills, we either won or got a favorable outcome.
